Genuine Karelian Pies Made by Hand, Honoring Tradition

The Karelian pie represents Finnish culinary heritage at its finest, with origins dating back several centuries.

In Karelian homes, baking took place almost every week alongside other cooking. Bread, sweet buns, various casseroles, and even fish or rutabaga pies were baked.

Karelian pies were naturally an essential part of this weekly baking routine, with Saturday typically being the baking day.

Baking usually involved the women of the household, and tasks could also be shared with the youngest family members. This way, practical skills and important tips were easily passed down from grandmother to mother and from mother to daughter. Valuable craftsmanship and know-how were passed down to the next generation, allowing the tradition to continue smoothly.

At Sorsa’s bakery, we also honor these traditions by baking Karelian pies, still shaping the edges by hand, while modern techniques enable large-scale production today.
